Easy Gluten Free Crepes Recipe

gluten free crepes recipe

Gluten free crepes recipe is a variation of classic crepes recipe made without wheat flour, which contains gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, as well as in barley and rye, and can be harmful to people with celiac disease or other disorders related to gluten intolerance.

The main ingredients for making gluten-free crepes include gluten-free flour, eggs, liquid (regular or plant-based milk, or water), salt and sugar (or other sweeteners).

Flour for gluten-free crepes

Various types of flour can be used for making gluten-free crepes, such as corn, rice, oat, buckwheat, chickpea, coconut, etc. These types of flour do not contain gluten and are often used in gluten-free recipes.

You can use one type of flour in the batter or mix several, depending on your taste preferences. For example, some types of flour have a neutral taste, such as rice or corn, while others will add their own recognizable flavor to the dish, such as buckwheat flour.

Gluten-free mixes can also be used. Fortunately, such mixes are common in supermarkets or online stores. For example, this gluten-free mix is popular. Usually, these mixes contain one or several types of gluten-free flour, as well as starch or several types of starch, which also do not contain gluten. Starch helps create a texture similar to that created by gluten. The same function can be performed by gums, such as xanthan gum, which is also often present in gluten-free mixes or recipes.

This gluten-free crepe recipe contains a mixture of rice and corn flour, as well as cornstarch. You can experiment with different types of flour, changing this combination. If you are using a gluten-free mix, you may not need to add cornstarch.

Eggs

Eggs are an important ingredient in gluten-free crepes as they help create the structure of the batter and provide necessary protein.

Liquid

As a liquid for the batter, you can use milk, water, or alternative dairy products, such as plant-based milk. Soy milk works great because its taste is quite neutral. The same can be said for rice milk. Other types of plant milk have a more pronounced taste, so it’s also a matter of taste or desired result.

Sweet or savory additions

Depending on your taste preferences, you can add various sweet or savory ingredients to the gluten-free batter, such as sugar, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, salt, pepper, etc. Salt is an important ingredient for the taste of crepes, so don’t forget to add it.

The process of making gluten-free crepes

Making gluten-free crepes is done the same way as making classic crepes: first, mix all the dry ingredients, then gradually add the wet ingredients and liquid and mix everything thoroughly until smooth. It is desirable to let the batter for gluten-free crepes stand for some time; you can even prepare it in the evening and thoroughly mix the batter in the morning before frying the crepes.
